NSA Reform Bill Fails Key Senate Hurdle As Republicans Cry Terror

I am disappointed by the fear mongering churned up by republicans such as Mitch McConnell and Marco Rubio, but I am especially disappointed that Rand helped torpedo the bill under the pretext that it didn’t fo far enough against the Patriot Act; sometimes baby steps are all that we can get for the moment. I too would like to see the Patriot Act repealed, but I would have voted for this bill because it is a start and you cannot begin if you do not start with somthing. Rand Paul talks a good game, but he often doesn’t deliver when the chips are down. It is time that our elected lawmakers let the mantle of fear and suspicion dissipate from our national psyche. As a byproduct of the tragedy that was 9/11, it has done us more harm than anything else. We needed healing not terror induced paranoia. We are a nation built on the rule of law which means that we have a responsibility not only to legislate laws, but to elect those will do a proper job in determining what makes a good law. Unfortunately, that is not always easy to ascertain, which is why we have lawmakers who cater to those who have very narrow agendas such as keeping the Homeland Security apparatus alive and kicking and defense contractors, who are more interested in keeping their profit margins healthy. I sincerely hope that we will, one day in the near future, get to the point where our lawmakers will see the light and let the Patriot Act go off to the graveyard of old and bad laws.
