Ferguson Officer Darren Wilson Not Indicted In Michael Brown Shooting

I am sad to see that the grand jury’s decision has not turned the page on this horrible tragedy. The facts remain that a police officer discharged his weapon 12 times against an unarmed black youth. The police officer may have been frightened, but still to shoot 12 times without being threatened with equal force is hard to justify. I can only hope that the community that comprises Ferguson will be able to listen to Michael Brown’s parents and after the shock and anger has worn off, that they will find ways to to remake their police department into a department that will no longer shoot first, will undertake more intensive training and learn better communication skills and instill an outreach program that would get them working in the community proactively, instead of just policing againt crime in the most narrow sense of the word, engaging in the truer form of protect and serve. I sincerely hope for this in Ferguson. Anyone can see that that the alternative is untenable and unhealthy, the police department and its leadership need to re-examine how they have behaved in the past and figure out what needs to be changed in order to move forward in a positive manner. It really is in their own best interests after all.
