Obama Is Smack In The Middle Of A Brewing Fight Over Workplace Wellness

Since employers are driven to finding ways, any way it seems, to keep profit margins healthy, this one is most definitely a new and creative one, using one’s less than stellar fitness and nutritional habits as leverage in order to force a better outcome. I have an easy solution, let’s divorce health care insurance from employer/employee relationships and simply adopt Medicare for All. I don’t believe that by simply releasing employers from healthcare insurance contributions, that it will have them suddenly invest in hiring, wage increases or anything remotely linked to anything other than bigger profits and higher stock prices, but it would change our profit driven health care model into something more civilized and less expensive overall. The rest of the industrialized world spend a lot less per capita and have similar or even better health care outcomes than we do on average, so when are we going to get the picture? Our profit minded health care insurance model starves our economy of thousands upon thousands of dollars each year because people have to pay fairly high deductables, high co-pays and out of pocket expenses, it doesn’t make for sound economic policy. I realize that the Affordable Care Act is still in its infancy and needs to work out all of its kinks, which since the Republican Party removed itself since the beginning from any mindful contributions, has been completely in the hands of those who want it to work so we aren’t going to see Medicare for All anytime soon, but it is something to keep in mind for the future.
