We have religious liberty written in our constitution “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” Moreover with the adoption of the 14th amendment, it has moved over to include states as well so there really is no need for any state driven “Religious Liberty” laws at all. Governor Pence is a bigot plain and simple and he has, with the stroke of his pen, signed his state’s legislators bigotry into law. If any business owner willingly denies service to people that are different then that is their choice, but they should never be protected from lawsuits because of their prejudical and hateful practices. They should be held accountable in the “free market place” and let the scales of commerce decide if they will be successful with their prejudical business model. It seems to me that the Republican Party as a whole is bent on taking us back a century or two to the past where feudalism reigned and the Church was supreme. In light of their actions I am not being disingenuous; their economic policies have led to an income inequality that is as blatant as it was back in the 1890’s and the 1920’s, their views on science are consistent with the time when the Church battled against Galileo and their views regarding women and sex also go back to the Middle Ages so if you are nostalgic for those times then vote Republican, but myself I love science, equal rights and if I am nostalgic, it is for the time in history when the middle class was on the upswing, we still had a lot of small businesses flourishing without the strip malls filled with the Walmarts and the Home Depots, when living wages were possible and education was affordable. I will admit that my nostalgia is only for the economic piece of that time period, in terms of social policy I don’t miss it at all, our society fought hard for Equal Rights and the fight isn’t over, not by a long shot; Governor Pence made sure of that and sadly other state’s legislatures are following suit down south. It is a sad day in America.
