John Oliver Shows Why U.S. Primaries And Caucuses Are ‘An Erratic Clusterf**k Every 4 Years’

How sad is it for the American people that we get our civic education from a comedy show instead of our journalistic outlets. If ever one was unsure that we needed to overhaul our restrictive two party political system, last night’s show should have made that abundantly clear. Basically both political parties have made elections their party and they can do what they want, regardless of what voters want. John Oliver made it clear that if we want our elections to accurately reflect voter preferences, we need to sit down and detangle all of the circuitous rules governing the process and moreover eliminate all of the secrecy involved. Ideally every state should be in alignment, transparency should be a foregone conclusion and both parties should engage in the same practices so every voter no matter where they live, what their ideological roots are, each one will have the same opportunity to influence the political process. Presidential elections shouldn’t be this hard or confusing, not to mention this long of an ordeal.
