Poverty is not a crime. It is unconscionable that certain municipalities are using their power to bleed these vulnerable people of their dignity and freedom. Another way municipalities have taken advantage of people is civil forfeitures, regardless of guilt or innocence, these actions are a direct result of economic mismanagement, when the power brokers don’t want to increase revenue through taxes, they seek other ways off the back of the powerless. We like to think of ourselves as evolved and moral, managing a municipality in a manner such as this belies any moral compass, it takes courage to make good choices, we need to figure out better ways to navigate economic viability, responsibility and accountability. Our society shouldn’t be reduced to profit and loss, though it feels like that, our society should be reflective of how we see ourselves, as a people of value, a place based on opportunity and possibility, not a place where you are only as good as the size of your wallet.
