We should not view this presidency as the new normal. I don’t want my lawmakers to validate any divisive, bigoted attitudes in government. I understand the damage six long years of republican obstructionism did to our nation, we could have had better economic outcomes for average households sooner if the Republican Party would have at least met the Democrats halfway. However, we are speaking of something completely different in the Trump administration, a blanket acceptance of racism, disrespect and hatred toward the “other”. I want Democratic lawmakers to stand up for the disenfranchised, women and their reproductive freedoms, public lands, public education and the LGBT communities. I don’t want to see any compromise that will harm the ideals that we hold true, our freedom to be who we are, marry who we want and be free agents of our bodies. We need to hold the line of decency, compassion and respect.
